Why we don’t call ourselves a CDP

💬 This came up in the episode and it is a question worth putting to the group, because most of you are living the answer.

“People know what a CDP is. They don’t know what 1PD Ops is. So why not just call yourselves a CDP?”

The reason comes down to ownership.

A CDP has always been positioned for tech teams. The buyer is engineering, the implementation is engineering, and the ownership stays with engineering. It never transfers back to marketing. Which means the marketer who needed the data in the first place still raises a ticket and waits.

The question we started from was a different one: without a tech team, what can a marketer actually do with their first-party data? Not in theory, but on a Tuesday with a campaign underperforming and no engineer free until next sprint.

Then 2021 and 2022 happened and every tool on the market started calling itself a CDP. Reverse ETL tools, tag managers, warehouses, email platforms. The word stopped carrying information.

So 1PD Ops is not a category invented to sound different in a crowded market. It names the work rather than the software: collect your first-party data, unify it, activate it back into the ad platforms, without a ticket in the middle.

The practical bit is this. Tell a marketing team they are buying a CDP, and within a quarter it has drifted back to the data team and nobody in marketing logs in.

Honest question for the group: if you have a CDP today, who actually opens it in a given week? And for anyone who has moved ownership from engineering back to marketing, what did it take?
